Context

Kuala Lumpur Art Book Fair carries the energy of Malaysia's independent creative scene, where self-publishing artists, makers and communities gather around printed matter.

The fair offers audiences a window into artbooks, zines, design objects and independent publishers from Malaysia and beyond.

Its value sits in its intimacy: the chance to meet artists, handle printed work and encounter creative practices that often live outside mainstream cultural platforms.

Challenge

The language around art books and independent publishing can feel niche, even when the experience itself is generous and accessible.

The communications needed to open the fair to wider audiences without diluting its independent spirit.

RUBIX had to translate KLABF's creative energy for lifestyle, culture and mainstream media while preserving the specificity of the self-publishing community.

Our Thinking

We framed KLABF as an experience of discovery: printed matter as something to browse, hold, collect and talk about.

The strategy broke down art and design terminology, replacing insider language with a more inviting story about indie publishing and creative community.

By pacing the campaign from announcement to teaser to close media encounter, the communications built anticipation while giving journalists and creators more personal ways into the fair.

  1. Make the niche welcoming

Translate art book culture through experience, curiosity and community rather than specialist vocabulary.

  2. Build anticipation gradually

Use announcement, teaser and preview moments to make the fair feel increasingly tangible.

  3. Create intimate access

Use media and influencer tours to bring people closer to organisers, artists and participating publishers.

The Work

RUBIX shaped the fair's communications across announcement, anticipation and on-ground media engagement.

  1. Industry announcement

A targeted marketing announcement created awareness of KLABF 2023's presence within the creative scene.

  2. Pre-event teaser campaign

Highlights and experience-led content generated anticipation ahead of the fair.

  3. Media and influencer tour

An intimate walkthrough and interviews gave media closer access to the organiser and participating artists.

Outcome

KLABF's story travelled across mainstream and digital channels while retaining its independent character.

The campaign generated wide conversation across multiple platforms and received notable mentions in mainstream media across different languages.

Digital conversation helped broaden the fair's reach across audience segments, reinforcing KLABF as a celebrated event for Malaysia's art book and self-publishing community.

Reflection

Independent culture does not need to be made simpler. It needs an invitation that helps more people enter it.

KLABF 2023 demonstrated how communications can widen access to a niche cultural scene without sanding down what makes it distinctive.
